Work in progress – the NGC7788 region in Cassiopeia

This is a 2-frame Hyperstar III mosaic of the NGC7788 region in Cassiopeia. This region is famous for having 6 open clusters in a line. However, towards the top of the frame (not visible in this image) is a fascinating supernova remnant CTB1 that I want to get. This will need to wait for dark skies and an attempt using very long sub-exposures.

Hi Greg – what’s the faint red ring that I can see in the centre top of the image? Is that real or an artifact? (it has a diameter about 1/4 the frame height) – hope my eyes aren’t tricking me…!

Aha!!! Well there you go – you’ve gone and spotted what I said couldn’t be seen in this image – very well done!!!! That is the bottom bit of CTB1 the supernova remnant in this area – it’s a beauty – it’s also the reason I haven’t published this image on the Forums yet. I really want to get CTB1!!! However, my last few outings have been taken up with M33 – hopefully I’ll get back to CTB1 very soon.

Ah cool 🙂 Looks like an uber-faint one (along with most of the rest of the Abell catalog!)- I’ve seen only a few images of this one from a quick search – most of them were in the region of 5-10 hours+ !

Yep you’re right on the total exposure times! That’s where the Hyperstar III comes in at 6 times the speed of an f#4.5 system. So I should be able to get something very nice with 4-hours (not this week though by the looks of it 🙁
