Just when you thought it couldn’t possibly get any better, Noel Carboni has now added the recently taken R72 data for M42 to our earlier H-alpha/RGB image. The infrared data not only revealed many more stars, but also brought out several regions of nebulosity to their very best. Most noticeably the “thundercloud” region between M43 and NGC1977, the faint emission nebulosity lying above the running man [NGC 1977], and the waterfall nebula lying below M42 near the bottom of the image. I think I am now quite happy with this result 🙂

Man o man, that’s good.
You surpass yourself, sir.
I hope APOD brings this to a wider audience.
Sirs, I mean.
Thank you 🙂 Very pleased you like it. It will certainly be going in the coffee-table book.
