Russ Croman’s StarXterminator can be used to create a separate “stars only” layer in Photoshop. You can then process the stars only layer to greatly reduce the impact of the stars, and then reintroduce this layer back into the original image.
This technique seems to work particularly well for the Hyperstar 4 image of Andromeda taken this year.
